What is WIPO?
The World Intellectual Property Organization, that is also known WIPO in short. It is a special unit of the United Nations that was set up in 1967. The WIPO Worldwide Academy started training people in IP protection in 1998. It offers online learning opportunities through the internet.The WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre was created in 1994 to resolve disputes.

India became a member of WIPO in 1975.
India made his participation under the following WIPO Treaties:

– Paris Convention (1998)
– Berne Convention (1928)
– IPO Convention (1975)
– Phonograms Convention (1975)
– Nairobi Treaty (1983)
– Nice Agreement (2019)
– Locarno Agreement (2019)
– Vienna Agreement (2019)
India joined all of these treaties. It was the first country to sign the Marrakesh Treaty.
India has made big improvements in the Global Innovation Index (GII) in recent years.
In 2019, India ranked 52nd, which is a significant rise from earlier years.
Since 2011, India has been the top innovative country in the Southern and Central Asia region.
India has shown better innovation performance compared to its GDP per capita for eight consecutive years. On quality of innovation, India ranks second among middle-income countries globally. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been a GII Knowledge Partner since 2009. In India, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry takes care of WIPO and related matters.
World Intellectual Property Indicator
The World Intellectual Property Indicator is an annual report issued by the WIPO. This report is provides a variety of indicators related to intellectual property. The data used in this report comes from national and regional IP offices, WIPO, the World Bank, and UNESCO. This kind of reports has been published by WIPO since 2009.
China leads in the data from WIPO.
He plays a dominating role in past years like in 2018, there were total 3,326,300 patent applications worldwide. Out of this 1,542,002 only from the China which making up 46.4% of the global total.
This number increased by 11.6% compared to 2017. Apart from this China also dominates in other areas such as utility models, trademarks, industrial designs, and more. The number of applications in these categories are expanding each year.

Wipo intellectual property was initiated in 1883 with the Paris Convention. After that it has been evolved over the time. From being a body that handled intellectual property issues, it has grown into an organization that promotes gender equality globally. This growth has been driven by its inclusion in the United Nations in 1974. Now this organization works around the world for achieving their aim.
